Goose
decoy spread
Choosing a goose decoy spread properly
plays a large role in your goose hunting success. A Canada goose decoy needs to have a few basic qualities to make it
effective. They need to be realistic, portable, contain some motion, and float
if needed when hunting over water. Below is a list of suggestions to think about when selecting
goose decoy spread. Portable goose
decoy spread
Portable goose decoy spreads include
shells, windsocks, and silhouette decoys. I prefer silhouette
decoys when hunting Canada geese. The reason I prefer silhouette
goose decoys in my portable spread is that they are lightweight,
compact, ultra realistic, and highly visible. They also have the
appearance of movement because they are two dimensional. These
decoys combined with a goose flag for motion at a distance and a wing
flapping decoy like the Wing
Waver Decoy for finishing geese makes for an effective spread.
Full body goose decoy spread
Full body goose decoys are the decoy of
choice if you can drive into your hunting field. Their realism
cannot be matched. Full body decoys are made by many manufacturers
and each has there advantages. I prefer a decoy that is realistic,
has paint that will not come off when thrown in a trailer, has parts
that will not break when thrown in a trailer, and will not blow over
when hunting in high winds. A properly set up full body goose
decoy spread combined with a goose flag for motion at a distance and a wing
flapping decoy like the Wing Waver Decoy for finishing geese makes
for the most effective goose decoy spread.
Floating goose decoy
Floating goose decoys are available from multiple decoy manufacturers.
Choosing a floating goose decoy is simple. Buy the best looking decoy that
is keel weighted for your hunting situation. If you pack in your decoys,
make sure the decoy you buy does not have a weighted keel. The weighted
keel will be unneeded extra weight. For all other situation I prefer a
weighted keel goose decoy. They right themselves in high wind and can be
picked up and setout quickly as you do not need to worry about righting the
decoy yourself.
The above suggestions will help you
with choosing a goose decoy spread.
