Goose hunting supplies

Selecting the proper goose hunting supplies from the beginning can save you money and increase your success.  Below is  a list of items necessary for successful goose hunting over decoys.

Hunting location

Location, Location, Location!  Your choice of location is your most important decision.  Hunt a poor spot and you will see no birds.  Hunt a great spot and you will shoot a limit.

Goose Calls

Your choice of goose calls is simple.  Buy a short reed goose call.  Short reed goose calls will make every sound a goose hunter needs, faster and louder than flute style calls.  Make sure an instructional CD is included with your call or you can purchase one here instructional goose calling CD. Listen to the instruction calling CD in your car on your morning commute to work, and practice, practice, practice!

Goose Decoys

Every goose hunter should own some silhouette goose decoys.  They are extremely realistic and are the only choice when hunting muddy fields or when you have to walk in to your goose field.  For more information on silhouette goose decoys visit silhouette goose decoys. Once you have a bunch of silhouette goose decoys, complete your spread with the most realistic decoy for your hunting and storage situation.  If you can drive into fields and have storage available in the off season a full body goose decoy would be my decoy of choice.  If you cannot drive into your hunting location or storage is of concern, purchase more silhouette goose decoys.  If you hunt over water, floating goose decoys would be the decoy of choice.

Goose hunting blind

Choosing a proper goose hunting blind various by your hunting location.  If you have to walk into an area, wear camouflage that matches your surroundings and try an hide in field stubble.  If you can drive into your location, consider digging a pit or purchasing a layout goose blind.  For more information on layout goose hunting blinds visit goose hunting blind.  However you blind yourself while hunting, make sure you disappear!

Goose Flags

Creating the illusion of motion within your goose decoy spread can make geese lock up at a distance.  Flagging is both a long range and short range attracter when hunting.  If you can see the geese, the geese can see your flag.  Often a flag is the only thing that can turn distant flocks of geese towards your decoys.  Do not leave home without your goose flag.

Goose Gun

Any 12 or 10 gauge repeating shotgun will work well for goose hunting.  Load them up with size 2 steel shot or larger and keep you shots under 40 yards for  clean quick kills.  20 gauge shotguns should be left home unless you limit yourself to 30 yard shots.

Conclusion - Assembling the above goose hunting supplies will be an excellent foundation for goose hunting success.  Remember to put yourself in a great location, practice your short reed goose calling, flag those geese at a distance, hide well, shoot straight, and goose dinner will quickly follow.
