How to use a duck call
Once you have learned how to blow a duck call,
your next step is learning when and where to use you new duck call. The
where is the most difficult. Where you decide to hunt
plays the most important role in your duck calling success. Choose a
spot where the birds want to be and you will be covered up in ducks.
Pick the wrong spot and you will question your calling ability when in
reality the problem is your choice of locations. The
following tips will assume you choose a spot the ducks want to be to use
your duck call. 1) If the birds are approaching your
decoys, don't give your location away and call at them. Instead wait for
them to get past your decoys 50 yards and hit them with a greeting
call. 2) Call at birds when you can see the ducks wing
tips and tails. This will insure you are not calling at birds that are
approaching your decoys for a closer look. 3) The
farther away the ducks, the louder you blow your duck call. Remember
which way the wind is blowing also. If the ducks are down wind they can
hear your calling from a further distance. 4) If the
birds are flaring at the instant you call, they may be call shy. If they
are flaring when you are not calling, more than likely something else is
wrong besides your calling. 5) Choose the proper duck
call for your location. If you are hunting small to mid size water or
any size water and it is not windy, a ultra ducky call like the Raspy
Talker Duck Call will be your call of choice. If you are hunting large water or
the winds are very strong, a louder open water call like the Fast Talker
Duck Call will be your call of choice. The ability to choose between a loud call
and a softer call can be the difference between shooting a limit and
shooting just a few. 6) Practice, Practice, Practice.
The blind is no place to learn how to blow a duck call. Learn that in
